Enclosed Auto Transportation Services
There are a few different types of auto transport carriers that you can choose from when it comes time to transport your car, but typically they’re grouped into two basic categories: open auto transportation services and enclosed auto transportation services. There is a third, known as flatbed transportation, but that’s typically not a type of transporter that you can choose, as it’s reserved for only specific types of vehicles. Typically auto transport companies consider open auto transportation services their standard method of shipping, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only option that is available to you. Enclosed auto transportation services are generally reserved for cars that are worth a pretty penny – sports cars, exotic cars, antiques and the like.
Enclosed auto transportation services are almost always going to be more expensive than open transport would be for the same vehicle on the same route, and there are several reasons for this. To start, there are far fewer enclosed shippers on the road than open ones, which naturally makes them harder to find and thus more expensive. Then of course you have the fact that enclosed trucks are more expensive to own, maintain and operate than an open auto transport carrier, on the whole, and because of their construction they can only handle – usually – four cars at a time, though there are some that can handle more. On the whole you’ll find that enclosed transportation is not worth it unless your vehicle is.
And that’s something that you need to think about – how valuable your vehicle is and how protective you are of said value. Most vehicles will depreciate by a few thousand dollars the moment you drive them off the lot, and continue to depreciate in value until they bottom out in ten or fifteen years. Newer vehicles are retaining higher values for longer periods of time, but most will still only be worth four figures at most in thirty or forty years’ time. Of course, some will be more popular and, over time, may see their value increase – for instance, the 1970 Ford Boss Mustang is worth about $270,000, which is certainly worth the price of enclosed transport. But a standard 1970 Mustang, in pristine condition, may only be worth a tenth of that – and that’s when you need to decide if it’s worth it. You can of course speak to your auto transport representative and get some advice from them if you are still unsure.
